Imran in Supreme Court for speedy hearing of Toshakhana case

Imran Khan, the former prime minister of Pakistan, has appealed to the Supreme Court for a speedy hearing in the controversial Toshakhana case. In April this year, the Islamabad High Court suspended the sentence of Imran Khan and his wife Bushra Bibi in the Toshakhana corruption case. Since then the status quo in this case is going on.

After being found guilty in this case, the PTI chief was declared ‘disqualified’ from election for five years. Because of this, he could not even participate in the last election.

The Express Tribune reported on Monday that Imran Khan’s lawyer Barrister Abu Zafar filed the petition in the Supreme Court on behalf of Imran Khan. PTI could not participate in the country’s general elections held on February 8 this year. Imran Khan could not participate even though the candidates of the party were elected independently. Pakistan’s World Cup-winning former captain is continuing a legal battle to be freed from the ban.

Imran Khan is alleged to have committed corruption in purchasing gifts for the state treasury by abusing his power while he was the Prime Minister. The value of these gifts received from different countries during the foreign tour is more than 140 million Pakistani rupees. And he bought these at a nominal price.

The Election Commission (ECP) termed Imran’s statement about state exchequer gifts as ‘false statements and misrepresentations’. At the same time, he was declared ‘ineligible’ for election under Article 63(1)(p) of the country’s constitution.

However, Imran and his party have always said that the Election Commission is working purposefully to keep them out of the elections.
