Death toll rises to 116 after stampede at religious event in India’s Uttar Pradesh The dead included 106 women and seven children.
Indian media NDTV reported this news in a report on Tuesday (July 2) citing local officials.
According to the report, a guru was addressing the devotees at the event in Hathras district on Tuesday (July 2). This incident happened at that time.
Visuals of the community health center show several bodies being brought there. Weeping relatives were also present.
Hindustan Times reported that a ‘satsang’ was organized at Mughlagari village in Hathras. Thousands of people attended that meeting. They went to a guru’s ‘satsang’. It is known that the Guru’s name is Narayan Shankar Hari.
A local police officer said, this ‘Satsangar’ was organized in a very small place. Crowding of many people in a small place creates a ‘suffocating’ situation. Initially, it is believed that people present at the ‘satsang’ became uncomfortable due to not being able to breathe in the venue. A stampede ensued as people rushed to leave.
Police also said that the weather during the event was very hot and humid. However, it is not entirely clear how the situation got out of control and the stampede happened.
Eyewitnesses said that the frenzy around the Satsang was at its peak. Many people appeared together. But suddenly the rush started. Again, the road where the meeting was taking place was also closed from Monday (July 1) night.
And as soon as the road was opened on Tuesday, people tried to get out in a hurry, when the accident happened. According to the latest available data, the majority of the dead are women. Besides, several children are also reported to have died.
Meanwhile, the locals rescued the injured and took them to the hospital, but there were allegations of negligence in the treatment.
Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath has inquired about the incident. An inquiry committee has already been formed on his instructions.
President of India Draupadi Murmu has expressed grief over this incident. Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah expressed condolences to the families of the deceased. The state government has announced a compensation of Rs 2 lakh for the families of the deceased and Rs 50,000 for the injured.
