Kerala landslide death toll rises to 166, many still missing

The death toll in the Wenade landslide in Kerala state of India has risen to 166. Many people are still missing in this incident.

According to the news agency Reuters, landslides occurred due to heavy rains in Kerala’s Wayanad. Many people were injured in this landslide in Meppadi, Mundakal Town and Churalmala of the district. So far the death toll has crossed 166.

About 1,000 people have been rescued from hill villages and tea and cardamom plantations, local authorities in Waynad district said in a statement. Among them, 195 people were injured. Besides, 225 people are still missing.

Soon after the landslide, all government agencies started rescue operations. Firefighters and members of the National Disaster Response Force were deployed at the scene.

In this incident, Prime Minister Narendra Modi has assured all kinds of assistance to the Chief Minister of Kerala. The Prime Minister’s Office has announced a compensation of Rs 2 lakh to the families of the deceased and Rs 50,000 to the injured.
