Mysterious deaths of 13 children in shelters in Delhi in 20 days

13 children have died in the past 20 days at a government-run shelter for children with special needs in Delhi, India. However, the cause of death of the children is not yet known.

This information came out in the investigation of a sub-divisional magistrate of the country. According to a report by India Today, 27 people have died at the Asha Kiran shelter in Rohini since January.

Stating that the number of deaths was much higher than last year, the Sub-Divisional Magistrate said, “The actual cause of death will be known after receiving the post-mortem report.” But there are complaints about negligence and standard of living.’

The National Commission for Women (NCW) has condemned the incident and sent a ‘fact-finding’ team to the shelter. National Commission for Women (NCW) chairperson Rekha Sharma said, ‘The Asha Kiran shelter run by the Delhi government for years has lost all hope. People are suffering and dying here. Delhi government is doing nothing, doing nothing. Considering the matter, we are sending a team there to investigate.

Delhi minister Atishi, however, disagreed with the death toll and asked the additional chief secretary of revenue to initiate a magisterial inquiry. Asked to submit a report within 48 hours. In his letter, Atishi mentioned that 14 people have died since January 2024 at the shelter home. The minister also recommended action against those who died due to negligence. He also demanded to take necessary measures to prevent such incidents from happening in the future.
