Uproar in Pakistan's Constituent Assembly over Imran Khan's imprisonment

There has been a great controversy in the National Assembly of the country’s Parliament regarding the imprisonment of former Prime Minister of Pakistan Imran Khan. Imran’s party Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) claims that their leader is not being given facilities in jail. However, the members of parliament of the ruling party rejected this claim and said that Imran is getting facilities like “five star hotel” in prison.

This incident happened in the National Assembly on Friday. In the session, opposition member Omar Ayub Khan said PTI founder Imran Khan is not being allowed to meet his family and party leaders. Leaders who went to meet Imran faced harassment outside the jail. They have to wait for hours.

Then Planning and Development Minister Ahsan Iqbal and Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) member Hanif Abbasi said in their speech that they were subjected to massive repression during the PTI government. Imran, who is in jail in various cases, has to prove his innocence in court. Do not ‘cry’ in front of the media.

Minister Ahsan Iqbal said that almost all the senior leaders of PML-N, including the current Prime Minister Shahbaz Sharif, were in jail. They have been able to prove in court that they are innocent. Regarding the complaint of Imran’s lack of facilities in jail, he said that facilities like those available in a five-star hotel have been arranged for Imran in jail.

After these statements, the opposition members started shouting slogans in protest. At one stage, a commotion started in the council due to counter slogans. Speaker Ayaz Sadiq was forced to adjourn the session till Monday evening. 18 issues were to be discussed in Friday’s session. The discussion was not possible due to the commotion. Only question and answer session was held. It was suspended for half an hour.

Meanwhile, Pakistan’s economy is in shaky condition due to political instability and terrorism. In such a situation, Imran commented that there is a risk due to the appearance of “narrowness” in the country. He made this comment after attending a court hearing on Friday.
