Shia-Sunni clashes in Pakistan, 30 dead

At least 30 people have been killed in clashes between Shia and Sunni communities in Kurram, northwestern Pakistan.

The trouble started five days ago over a land dispute in Kurram district near the Afghanistan border. Then the dispute took a big shape. News from Dawn and Deutsche Welle.

Local authorities said that at least 75 people were injured in the incident. A senior administrative officer of Kurram said many houses were damaged. The government and other nations have made many efforts to stop this conflict. But it didn’t work.

Barrister Saif Ali, spokesperson for the regional government, said the administration was taking help from senior tribal leaders to ease tensions. He claimed that both sides have agreed to a ceasefire.

Kurram has seen several clashes between Shias and Sunnis in recent years. Also in July, there was a dispute between them over land. Several people died in the conflict.

Pakistan is primarily a Sunni-dominated country. Only 15 percent of the total population are Shia Muslims. They complain that they are sometimes subjected to violence and discord.
