India wants to get port facilities in Bangladesh and Sri Lanka
India wants to strengthen its maritime power by building two additional ports in Bangladesh and Sri Lanka, said the country’s Minister of Ports, Shipping and Waterways Sarbananda Sonowal.
Sonowal said this while describing the achievements of his ministry in the first 100 days of the new NDA government on Wednesday. He also said that an Indian company under his ministry will soon develop Bangladesh’s second largest and busiest Mongla port. News from Mint.
According to the report, India has already built port facilities in Iran’s Chabahar and Myanmar’s Sittwe. The country will further strengthen its presence in the maritime world.
Sonowal said, “We want to be a global leader in the maritime sector.”
He also said that in the last 100 days, his government has approved the construction of a huge port worth Rs 76,220 crore at Bhadhaban in Maharashtra. It will further expand India’s port infrastructure and create employment opportunities for at least 1.2 million people. It is expected that the first phase of this port will be operational by 2029.
Sonowal mentioned that another mega port has also been proposed in the Gulf of Galatia in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands. The Rs 44,000 crore project will be developed through a public-private partnership.
