Bangladeshi Hasan won an award at the oil and gas industry fair in Malaysia

Expatriate Bangladeshi researcher Hasan Tarif received the inventor’s award at the oil and gas industry fair in Malaysia. He received this award for the invention of optical fiber radiation survey meter.

In the recently held three-day long oil and gas industry fair, Malaysia Petroleum (Petronas) Elip Sdn Bhd’s product development advisor, researcher. Zubair presented the award to Hasan Tarif.

Malaysia Petroleum Management Senior Vice President Datuk Engineer Bacho Pilong presented the award to Hasan Tarif. At this time, Nadjim Gani, Senior Engineer of Elaip Sdn Bhd and many others were present.

Malaysia Petroleum (Petronas) awarded 6 project innovators out of 40 projects participating in the oil and gas industry fair.

Hasan Tarif said Ellip’s invention is an optical fiber radiation survey meter, designed to meet the growing demand for remote monitoring of contamination in oil and gas tubulars. This invention has been patented in 120 countries under the Patent Cooperation Treaty (PCT). It fulfills an important need of the industry. This allows remote measurements along the interior of the tubulars. Access through traditional devices is often difficult. These tubulars, typically 10 meters in length, accumulate naturally occurring radioactive material over the years, posing significant corrosion challenges.

This new device not only increases safety for workers by facilitating remote measurements, but also reduces their exposure to harmful radiation. But it also reduces operation costs by 20 percent, enabling faster and more efficient measurements.

The research and development of this breakthrough device was led by the current lecturer of the Faculty of Computing and Informatics of Multimedia University. Zubair.

In 2015, while a master’s student at Multimedia University, Md. Zubair developed a prototype system for measuring ionizing radiation using fiber optic technology. The invention was further developed when the Elip Company and Multimedia University received a grant from the Ministry of Higher Education to develop the device under the Public-Private Research Network Scheme.

Zubair Hasan Tarif said digital twin, analytics and robotic process automation are currently hot topics in the oil and gas industry, which is using information technology to increase efficiency and operational performance. Especially technologies like Digital Twins, which act as a virtual model of factory equipment, facilitate timely monitoring and maintenance forecasts and optimize production workflows.

He also said that there is a great opportunity to modernize the current oil and gas industry of Bangladesh by using this technology.
