The Cabinet Committee on Security headed by Prime Minister Narendra Modi has approved the construction of two nuclear-powered ‘attack submarines’. Both these submarines will be designed and built using indigenous Indian technology. These are India’s Arihant class nuclear powered submarines.

According to the plan, India intends to build a total of six nuclear-powered attack submarines. These will be powered by large nuclear reactors. In addition to conventional weapons, missiles capable of carrying nuclear weapons will also be added to it. It is an important part of India’s plan.

The source, who did not want to be named, also said that these two new attack submarines will be built entirely with indigenous technology and will not require any foreign assistance. He said that India has already acquired the technical capability to implement the complex project.

Meanwhile, India has approved a Rs 34,500 crore project to buy MQ-9B attack drones from the US. India will buy 31 drones under this project. which will be distributed among various parts of the Indian Armed Forces. These drones are long-range and capable of carrying heavy weapons.

General Atomics, the maker of MQ-9B, has signed an agreement with Bharat Forge to manufacture these unmanned drones and has also committed to set up a center for maintenance of the drones in India.
