15 killed in firing in Pakistan

At least 15 people were killed and several injured in a firing incident in Pakistan’s Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP).

Local hospital and government officials said the incident took place in Kunj Alizai area of Kurram district of the province on Saturday.

Confirming the matter, Deputy Commissioner (DC) Javidullah Mehsud of Kurram said that the firing took place on the Kunj Alizai mountain near the Pak-Afghan border and on the road there.

Earlier, District Headquarters Hospital Medical Superintendent Mir Hasan said that nine people injured in the firing were brought to the hospital, one of whom died under treatment. The rest are undergoing treatment and the condition of three is critical, he said.

DC Mehsud said security measures are being strengthened at the entry and exit points of Kurram and necessary steps are being taken to restore peace in the area.

Pir Haider Ali Shah, a former Member of Parliament and member of the local jirga (panchayat) of Kurram, said that the clash took place while the members of the jirga were present, which is very unfortunate.

At least 46 people were killed and 91 injured in the violence that erupted last month over a land dispute in Kurram. In another round of clashes in July, 49 people were killed.

In September, the district administration sought the help of a local jirga to facilitate talks between the two rival groups. The KP government has also constituted a Land Commission to resolve land disputes. Source: Don
