Petition against constitutional amendment dismissed in Pakistan

The Supreme Court of Pakistan dismissed the petition challenging the proposed 26th constitutional amendment. Former president of the Supreme Court Bar and current member of the Pakistan Bar Council Abid S. Zubairi and other members of the council filed a petition seeking the withdrawal of the amendment. They challenged this amendment on 16 September.

With this news, Online Geo News says that in the much-discussed constitutional package, the government wants to set up a federal constitutional court and make the term of the chief justice three years, among other things. But this decision was appealed.

A three-judge Supreme Court bench headed by Chief Justice Qazi Faiz Isa held the hearing on Thursday. During the hearing, lawyer Hamid Khan requested the bench to withdraw the petition.

At this stage, the Chief Justice expressed surprise as to why the petitioners had appointed only one lawyer, Hamid Khan.

Notably, Hamid Khan is the leader of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf.
