Earthquake shakes Jammu and Kashmir

The Indian state of Jammu and Kashmir has been shaken by an earthquake. The magnitude was 5.8. The earthquake occurred at 4:19 pm on Thursday, India’s central geological organization, the National Center for Seismology (NCS), said in a statement.

The tremors of the earthquake were felt in all areas of the state. People were seen running in panic in many areas. However, there has been no news of any loss of life or damage from any area of Jammu and Kashmir so far.

The NCS statement said that the epicenter of the earthquake was 209 km deep in the Afghanistan-Tajikistan border area.

Jammu and Kashmir has always been prone to earthquakes due to its geographical location. This region has a past record of very large destructive earthquakes. The people of the rural areas of this state live in houses made of mud to ensure self-protection from earthquakes.

Earlier, on October 8, 2005, a 7.2 magnitude earthquake killed more than 80,000 people in Jammu and Kashmir. The epicenter of that earthquake was the India-Pakistan border region of Kashmir.
