Bangladesh flag desecration in Kolkata, Dhaka's strong condemnation and concern

The Bangladesh government has expressed deep concern over the organized and violent protests outside the Bangladesh Deputy High Commission in Kolkata, the capital of West Bengal, India.

A local organization called Bengali Hindu Jagran organized the protest on Thursday (November 28) afternoon.

The national flag of Bangladesh was desecrated there and an effigy of Chief Advisor Dr. Muhammad Yunus was burned.

Dhaka has strongly condemned these incidents. At the same time, it has called on the Indian government to ensure the security of the Bangladesh Deputy High Commission in Kolkata and other diplomatic missions of Bangladesh in India, as well as diplomatic and non-diplomatic members.

The call was made in a statement from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs on Friday (November 29).

The statement mentioned that the Bangladesh government notes with deep concern that a violent protest was held outside the Bangladesh Deputy High Commission in Kolkata yesterday afternoon by a Hindu organization from Kolkata, ‘Bengali Hindu Jagran’. At that time, a large group of protesters organized a rally and demonstration that turned violent. The protesters broke through the police barricade and reached the premises of the Bangladesh Deputy High Commission. They set fire to the national flag of Bangladesh and burnt the effigy of the Chief Advisor of the Bangladesh Government. Although the situation seems to be under control at present, there is insecurity among all the members of the Deputy High Commission.

It also said that the Bangladesh government strongly condemns the heinous act of insulting the national flag of Bangladesh and burning the effigy of the Chief Advisor. The Bangladesh government calls on the Indian government to take necessary measures to prevent such incidents from happening in the future.

The statement further mentioned that the Bangladesh government condemns any kind of violent activity. At the same time, it calls on the Indian government to ensure the security of the Bangladesh Deputy High Commission in Kolkata and other diplomatic missions of Bangladesh in India, as well as diplomatic and non-diplomatic members.
