Dhaka, Tuesday: Brazil has expressed a renewed interest in boosting business and investment ties with Bangladesh, with particular emphasis on meat processing, leather trade, and sports cooperation.

Speaking at an exchange of views with the South Asian Climate Change Journalists Forum (SACCJF), Bangladesh Chapter, Brazilian Ambassador Paulo Fernando Diaz Perez said that several Brazilian companies are keen to invest in Bangladesh. In particular, meat processing companies are interested in establishing factories in the country.

The ambassador noted that Brazil wants to export beef to Bangladesh at affordable prices. “Although discussions on this matter had advanced significantly, the process stalled after the fall of the previous government. However, we are hopeful that the export process will accelerate once halal certification for Brazilian meat is approved,” he said.

He further added that Brazil also seeks to expand its imports of leather and footwear from Bangladesh. Key issues of bilateral relations, including trade and investment, are expected to be discussed at the 3rd Bangladesh-Brazil Foreign Office Consultation scheduled to be held in Dhaka this October.

Highlighting cultural and sports ties, Ambassador Perez said Brazil is ready to extend cooperation in developing football in Bangladesh.

Earlier in the meeting, the ambassador briefed the forum leaders on the upcoming World Climate Conference COP-30, which will be held in Belém, Brazil this November. He criticized wealthy nations for failing to deliver on their financial commitments to the global climate fund but urged all countries to act collectively to combat the impacts of climate change.

“The world cannot sit idle. Everyone must contribute from their respective positions. Journalists have a crucial role to play in raising awareness and inspiring coordinated action,” he stressed.

The meeting was attended by SACCJF Executive President Asaduzzaman Samrat, Secretary General Karamot Ullah Biplob, Bangladesh Chapter President Masum Billah, General Secretary Shamsuddin Elias, Vice President Imrul Kayes, and members Minakshi Choudhury, Imran Hossain Sumon and Mithun Sarkar.
