Katmandu: Prime Minister Pushpa Kamal Dahal will witness the swearing-in of Narendra Modi as Indian prime minister on Saturday.

Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Narayan Kaji Shrestha confirmed with the Post that Prime Minister Dahal will visit New Delhi to attend the oath-taking ceremony.

The foreign ministry is finalising the delegates travelling with the prime minister to the Indian capital city.

Modi will assume office as prime minister for a historic third consecutive term after the Bharatiya Janata Party-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) secured 293 seats in the recent elections. Modi is only the second leader to win a third term after founding Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru.

In 2014, the then Prime Minister Sushila Koirala attended Modi’s oath-taking ceremony when he was elected prime minister for the first time.

The Indian government has invited heads of government from other Saarc countries for the swearing-in ceremony.

Prime Minister Dahal congratulated Modi on his election victory on Tuesday.

Dahal took to X to ‘note the successful completion of the world’s largest democratic exercise with the enthusiastic participation of the people of India’ as Modi’s Bharatiya Janata Party won 240 seats in the 543-member lower house.

The prime minister also held a telephone conversation with Modi.

“Happy to speak with PM @cmprachanda. Thanked him for his warm wishes,” Modi said in a post on X. “We reaffirmed our shared commitment to bolster the deep-rooted and multifaceted partnership between India and Nepal, and agreed to sustain the positive momentum in our relations.”

Also, Nepali Congress President Sher Bahadur Deuba and CPN-UML chair KP Sharma Oli, among other leaders from Nepal, congratulated the Indian leader on his election.
