Public Awareness on Climate Change Strengthened at Raipur Conclave

Raipur, August 23, 2025 : A day-long seminar on “Impact of Climate Change in Central India” along with a drawing and essay competition was successfully organized at the university auditorium, a joint initiative by the South Asian Climate Change Journalists Forum (SACCJF-India) and Pandit Ravishankar Shukla University, Raipur.
The chief guest of the event was the Hon’ble Governor of Chhattisgarh, Shri Ramen Deka. In his address, he said, “The problem of climate change cannot be solved by government initiatives alone. Every citizen—students, teachers, or common people—must take responsibility in this regard. Only then is it possible to build a beautiful and safe environment.”
He further added, “The entire world is currently facing two major threats—the threat of nuclear power and the threat of climate change.” His message was clear: if we protect nature, nature will protect us.
Soumya Bandyopadhyay, an advisor to SACCJF, spoke about the challenges related to climate change. He emphasized that everyone must be resolute in their actions to protect nature. The university’s Vice-Chancellor, Professor Sachchidanand Shukla, highlighted the various initiatives and awareness-building activities undertaken by the university. During the event, Vice-Chancellor Shukla also felicitated Ashish Gupta, the president of the Climate Change Journalists Forum.
Approximately 700 students from various schools in Raipur participated in the event. A drawing and essay competition based on climate change was held. Governor Deka honored the winners and the members of the judging panel. The students demonstrated their creativity and awareness in the competitions.
In the final session of the event, Professor Mukundlal Nayak and Professor Debashis Sanyal presented informative and thoughtful lectures on climate change, which helped the students gain a new perspective. Notably, Nayak has recently been acclaimed in the circles of botanical world for discovering a new species of Banyan tree.
The event has been considered an important step in increasing public awareness about climate change and actively engaging all sections of society.
