Reflections on Afghanistan’s History: Lessons Learned Amidst Commemoration of Mujahideen Victory

In a solemn commemoration event marking the Mujahideen victory on Saur 8, 1371, Noor Mohammad Saqib, the acting Minister of Hajj and Religious Affairs, delivered a poignant message reflecting on the challenges that have beset Afghanistan’s path to stability and unity. Saqib lamented that despite the triumph of the Mujahideen, disputes among them prevented the preservation of their hard-won victory.

Speaking against the backdrop of Afghanistan’s tumultuous history, Saqib emphasized the resilience of the Afghan people in the face of external interventions and attacks by major powers. He noted that while Afghanistan successfully repelled these incursions, internal divisions ultimately paved the way for the emergence of the Taliban movement.

Echoing Saqib’s sentiments, other officials present at the event pointed to the disruptive influence of communist regimes, particularly those backed by the former Soviet Union, in sowing discord and internal strife within Afghanistan. Sayed Ahmad Shahidkhil, the military deputy of the Ministry for Virtue and Vice, highlighted the nefarious conspiracies that led to the martyrdom of scholars, underscoring the lengths to which Afghanistan’s enemies would go to undermine its sovereignty.

Madar Ali Karimi Bamyani, the deputy minister of Urban Development and Housing, invoked the lessons of history, urging vigilance and unity in the face of ongoing threats to Afghanistan’s stability. Khalil Rahman Haqqani, the acting Minister of Refugees and Repatriates, sounded a similar note of caution, warning of continued attempts by adversaries to sow division and chaos.

Against the backdrop of Afghanistan’s complex social and political landscape, members of the Assembly of Scholars and influential Shia figures highlighted the insidious efforts to stoke religious, ethnic, and linguistic prejudices over the past three decades. Ataullah Sadiq, a member of the Assembly of Scholars, lamented the setbacks endured by Afghanistan during this period, cautioning against complacency in the face of lingering challenges.
