A total of 1,000 tons worth of goods have been transported via the sea-to-air service provided at the Velana International Airport (VIA).

The Maldives Airports Company Limited (MACL), which operates the airport, confirmed that with Virgin Atlantic signing up for the service on Monday, VIA will be extending the seat-to-air service to a total of 12 airlines now.

MACL launched sea-to-air to facilitate safer and faster air delivery of cargo and consignments received to Maldives Ports Limited (MPL) via sea.

The company further notes that the primary commodities carried through sea-to-air include garments imported from Bangladesh to the Maldives via sea.

MACL adds the inclusion of more airlines is testament to the success and expansion of the recently introduced logistics service.

Airlines that currently provide sea-to-air service:

    • Turkish Airlines
    • Qatar Airways
    • Emirates Airlines
    • Aeroflot
    • Neos
    • Gulf Air
    • Discover Airlines
    • Condor
    • British Airways
    • Virgin Atlantic

The sea-to-air cargo service is provided through a collaboration between MACL and MPL.

VIA’s inclusion in the global cargo connectivity logistics chain is indication of MACL’s continued contibution to the Maldives economy, the company noted.

MACL further assured it remains committed in providing safe and secure services that conform to international best practice standards.

The new cargo terminal opened earlier in 2024 is capable of providing the sea-to-air cargo service.
