Rape-murder of doctor: Protests intensify in various cities of India

The protests that started against the rape and murder of a doctor at the RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in West Bengal, India are gradually intensifying. People of different professions took to the streets in different cities.

According to a BBC report, Calcutta is in uproar over the rape and murder of doctors at the RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in West Bengal.

Protests have spread across the state due to this incident. On Wednesday (August 14), many men and women took part in the ‘Occupy Night’ program in various cities including Kolkata.

Women leader Rimzhim Sinha called for this program. At that time, not only Kolkata but also cities like Delhi, Hyderabad, Mumbai and Pune in India, the general public participated in small protests.

Clashes broke out between the police and an ‘unidentified’ group of people during a peaceful protest at RG Kar Hospital. At that time, the emergency department of the hospital was vandalized. At one point, the police fired tear gas to disperse the unruly crowd.

A few police vehicles were also vandalized. A student of the medical college said that some foreigners attacked there.

In different parts of the city, people from different professions joined to show solidarity with the program of women. They marched strongly with protest signs. Their faces were illuminated by the light of mobile phones, candles and torches. Some had national flags in their hands.
