Bangladesh will take measures for the security of minorities in its own interest: S Jaishankar

Indian Foreign Minister S Jaishankar has said that the treatment of minorities in Bangladesh is a concern for India and New Delhi hopes that Dhaka will take measures for their security in its own interest. He made these remarks during a question-and-answer session in the Lok Sabha, the lower house of the Indian Parliament, on Friday (December 13). Times of India reports.

According to the report, in response to a question from Congress MP Manish Tewari, Jaishankar said, “India hopes that the new government of Bangladesh will move towards mutually beneficial and stable relations. We have drawn their attention to our concerns.”

He said that the treatment of minorities in Bangladesh has become a cause for concern, as there have been several attacks on them. We hope that Bangladesh will take measures to protect minorities in its own interest.

Stating that India has a good track record in development projects in Bangladesh, the Indian Foreign Minister said, “The ‘Neighborhood First’ policy means that we have important development projects in almost every neighboring country except Pakistan and China, and so is the case with Bangladesh.” Stating that India has a partnership with Bangladesh in various development activities, Jaishankar said, it is important for both sides to behave maturely in the Dhaka-New Delhi relationship. Our neighboring countries also have their own politics. There will be ups and downs, that is normal. However, our goal is to ensure stability and increase cooperation.
