Indian MP's question: Under what status was Sheikh Hasina granted asylum in India?

Former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina resigned on August 5 in the face of anti-discrimination student protests. Since then, she has been in the Indian capital, New Delhi. She often gives various speeches and statements from there.

In such a situation, questions have started to arise in India itself about the basis on which Sheikh Hasina was granted asylum. This question was raised two days ago by some members of the Indian Parliament.

After returning from a visit to Dhaka, India’s Foreign Secretary Vikram Mishri met with the Parliamentary Standing Committee of the Ministry of External Affairs on Wednesday. In the meeting, he briefed the top officials of the interim government of Bangladesh on the issues.

The meeting was attended by 21 to 22 members of the country’s parliament.

Citing multiple sources who attended the briefing, the country’s media outlet INS reported that some Indian parliamentarians asked Foreign Secretary Vikram Mishri about the status of Sheikh Hasina in the country.

Hyderabad’s influential MP and All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM) chief Asaduddin Owaisi raised the same question on Saturday. This member of the lower house of the country’s parliament, Lok Sabha, also spoke about the alleged minority issue in Bangladesh.

He said that attacks on minorities in Bangladesh are being used to spread hatred against Indian Muslims.

Participating in a special program of the country’s media outlet Ajtak News, ‘Agenda Ajtak’, this Hyderabad MP said that the Indian government should talk to the interim government led by Dr. Muhammad Yunus about the attacks on minorities. Why is hatred being spread against Indian Muslims due to attacks on minorities in Bangladesh?

After that, questioning the former Prime Minister of Bangladesh’s asylum in India, he said, why has ousted Prime Minister of Bangladesh Sheikh Hasina taken refuge in India and is making statements against the Bangladesh government. Does the BJP government led by Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi support these statements of Sheikh Hasina?

Owaisi said India’s foreign policy relationship with Bangladesh should be as a country; not with any particular family.
