Male: Maldives Parliament Speaker Mohamed Nasheed has made a strong statement accusing President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih of indirectly encouraging the drug trade in the Maldives. He made the remarks while speaking at a campaign meeting of The Democrats’ presidential candidate, Hulhudhoo MP Ilyas Labeeb, in Addu City,

Nasheed said while Kaashidhoo MP Abdulla Jabir has made remarks suggesting that President Solih would facilitate drug use, President Solih stands by, simply applauding such remarks. Nasheed criticized the lack of a clear response from President Solih to such statements, which, according to Nasheed, gives the impression of support.

“Jabir claims that President Solih will further facilitate drugs. I find it inappropriate to treat such matters lightly. You know, President Solih is just sitting there, applauding Jabir’s remarks,” Nasheed said.

Nasheed highlighted that Jabir’s statements are not humorous and create confusion among the people. He pointed out that President Solih’s lack of response to these statements indicates his support.

Nasheed stressed the importance of finding effective ways to combat drug abuse among young people and urged the government to take responsibility for caring for those struggling with addiction. He expressed concern over the increasing number of drug users and highlighted how drug trafficking contributes to funding extremist groups.
