Colombo, July 13 (Daily Mirror) – Minister of Foreign Affairs, Foreign Employment and Tourism, Vijitha Herath, met with Chinese Foreign Minister H.E. Wang Yi on the sidelines of the ASEAN Foreign Ministers’ Meetings in Kuala Lumpur yesterday (12).

The discussions reaffirmed the longstanding friendship and strategic cooperative partnership between Sri Lanka and China. Minister Herath conveyed Sri Lanka’s deep appreciation for China’s unwavering support in times of need, particularly its assistance in safeguarding Sri Lanka’s sovereignty, independence, and territorial integrity, as well as its timely cooperation during recent economic challenges.

Minister Herath emphasized that the strong bilateral relationship has significantly contributed to Sri Lanka’s development and regional connectivity.

He reiterated Sri Lanka’s firm commitment to the one-China policy and expressed readiness to further strengthen cooperation in key sectors such as trade, investment, infrastructure development, and maritime affairs.

He also noted the importance of implementing the shared vision agreed upon by the leaders of both countries, highlighting ongoing projects under the Belt and Road Initiative, including the Colombo Port City and Hambantota Port, which hold strategic value for Sri Lanka’s economic growth.

The two sides exchanged views on expanding cooperation in emerging areas such as green energy, the digital economy, agriculture, and the marine sector. Minister Herath welcomed China’s continued support and expressed confidence that the strategic cooperative partnership would continue to deliver tangible benefits to both countries and their peoples.

The meeting concluded with both ministers affirming their shared vision for a strong and enduring partnership grounded in mutual respect, sovereignty, and a commitment to peaceful regional development.
