The students of Manipur lowered the flag of their country and hoisted the Satranga flag
Angry students have attacked various government buildings in India’s northeastern state of Manipur. They attacked the Raj Bhavan and the office of the Deputy Commissioner (DC) of Manipur in the morning local time on Monday. At that time, they lowered the flag drawn at the DC office and hoisted a satranga flag.
This information has been reported by the Northeast edition of the country’s media India Today and online media Eastmojo.
Students in Manipur attacked the main government building there on Monday, India Today said. The protest of the students has intensified. Angry students attacked the Raj Bhavan and the Deputy Commissioner’s office in Thibal.
Earlier, thousands of students took to the streets of the capital Imphal to demand major changes in the state’s security system. At that time they alleged that the government administration has failed to ensure the security of the state.
The protesting students demanded the central government to remove the current security adviser of the state and give maximum powers to the state government to restore peace in Manipur. Protesters say local authorities should take responsibility for security operations to better deal with the ongoing crisis.
The protesting students attempted to attack the residence of state Chief Minister Biren Singh. The security forces fired tear gas and baton charge to control the situation. Later, the angry students staged a sit-in in front of the Raj Bhavan.
A video of angry students of Manipur taking down a flag from the government office and hoisting another flag there has gone viral on social media Facebook. Eastmojo reports that the newly hoisted flag by the students is believed to be the Kanglipak or Salai Turret flag. Manipur students hoisting a new flag at the government office has sparked widespread criticism on social media.
According to initial information, students have reportedly lowered the tricolor national flag of India and hoisted a new tricolor flag in Manipur. According to Eastmojo, the incident took place at the office of the Deputy Commissioner (DC) of Thoubal district in the state. On the roof of the building, the students hoisted a seven-color flag. People present there are seen cheering during this incident.
A Subhash Singh, Deputy Commissioner of Thoubal, told Eastmojo that the protesters had pulled down an old Salai Turret flag and hoisted a new one there. And this incident did not happen in the main building of the DC office, but it happened at the main gate, he claimed.
“Kanglipak or Salai Turret Flag” is a rectangular seven color flag. Many in Manipur use this flag to represent the seven clans of the ancient Meiti ethnic group.
Subhash Singh said the students took down an old Salai Turret flag and hoisted a new one. However, the new flag was taken down shortly after. Clarifying the matter, he said, “We usually do not hoist the flag at the main gate. Tricolor is flown at our main office building.”
