Kabul: The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations reported that 27% of Afghanistan’s population is in a food crisis, at an emergency level.
According to the report, strengthening agriculture in Afghanistan can significantly contribute to achieving self-sufficiency.
Rafi, who works from dawn to dusk to support his seven-member family in a corner of Kabul city, called for assistance from the government and aid organizations.
“Help us; we are from Afghanistan and nowhere else. We live in the old city of Kabul and don’t even have our own house. We pay 3,000 afghani a month for rent,” Rafi told TOLOnews.
The Ministry of Economy said it is collaborating with aid organizations to increase assistance to overcome food insecurity in the country.
Abdul Latif Nazari, the deputy Minister of Economy, said: “We are in contact with the international community and aid organizations to solve the problem of food insecurity through increased assistance.”
According to some economic analysts, investment in large infrastructure projects, especially in the agricultural development sector, will bring Afghanistan closer to self-sufficiency.
“If the international community wants to end this charity and work on infrastructure projects, then we can achieve self-sufficiency,” said Mohammad Nabi Afghan, an economic analyst.
A month ago, the United Nations warned in a report that 15.8 million people in Afghanistan will face severe food insecurity this year.
